The Free Women

The Free Women (Les Femmes Libres) series is a collection of bronze sculptures, produced in eight editions, that embodies with both strength and delicacy the power, courage, and dignity of women. Each figure holds a wheel shaped like a saw blade, a metaphor for life which she fervently protects. The wheel’s irregular edge evokes both the harshness of existence and the trials they must overcome, while their faces—at the crossroads of futurism and classicism—confer upon them a majestic timelessness. They appear as universal beings, journeying across the world in their most accomplished form.

A breath of humor runs through these works, which subvert and reinvent the great archetypes of historical sculpture. Thus, The Walking Man or The Thinker are transformed into a woman meditating on Mother Earth, seated upon the planet itself. As for Bourdelle’s Hercules the Archer, it is reborn in the guise of a powerful goddess, celebrating feminine creative energy and freedom.
